National Precast Concrete Association
Awards Highest Honor to Superior Concrete Products
Euless, Texas -
Superior Concrete Products will receive the 2001 National Precast
Concrete Association's (NPCA) Building, Housing, Landscape & Specialty
Products Award at its February convention, according to Barry Stevens,
PH.D, CFP, Superior's vise president of sales and engineering.
Superior is being
recognized for the manufacture and installation of a custom decorative
precast concrete screening and sound wall for an electrical substation
in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Stevens said. The NPCA competition is
held annually and all entries are judged by its Building, Housing,
Landscape & Specialty Product Committee. Awards are based
according to project innovation, cost benefits, schedule savings, ease
of construction and aesthetics.
"The project
called for a high-quality, no-maintenance, aesthetically-pleasing
screening and sound barrier to be built around the working substation,"
Stevens added. "We installed the custom 175-foot x 10-foot high
SUPERIOR-STONEú screening wall without hindering the plant's operations
or causing any down time - all within the utility's cost, quality and
time parameters."
The prestigious
award comes on the heels of the NPCA's 4th re-certification of Superior
Concrete's Cleburne, Texas manufacturing facility. A mark of
quality, the certification means Superior Concrete has met or exceeded
the NPCA's high standards in all areas of production, safety and
information management. Superior Concrete has been continuously
certified with NPCA since 1997.

Maryland Department of Transportation
Awards Superior Concrete Products
Euless, Texas - The
Maryland Department of Transportation has presented an Award of
Excellence to Superior Concrete Products as part of its Maryland Quality
Initiative program.
Superior was
recognized for its manufacture and installation of a custom decorative
precast concrete screening and sound wall along Canal Parkway in
Cumberland, MD. The Maryland DOT award was given to Superior for,
"Utilizing the Thing Beyond the Pavement Approach for Context
Sensitive Project Development - Large Project," said Barry Stevens,
Superior Concrete Products vice president of sales and engineering.
The projects were
judged on overall planning and design to compliment the physical,
cultural, social and environmental setting, while maintaining safety and
mobility, according to Parker F. Williams, administrator for the
Maryland State Highway Administration.
"We manufactured
and installed the custom 1,221-foot long by 9-foot high SUPERIOR-WOOD
PLUSú integrally colored wood-textured precast concrete screening wall
to provide an aesthetically-pleasing and permanent barrier along Canal
Parkway," Stevens said.
There were many
advantages to using Superior's decorative precast concrete wall, he
added. First, it provided the desired look of wood, with the
strength, reliability and durability of reinforced concrete.
Second, Superior custom-manufactured the wall to the DOT's
specifications in the NPCA Certified manufacturing plant, taking into
account the wind-load requirements, weather extremes, soil conditions
and even the custom charcoal integral color. Also, installation
time was faster and overall costs were significantly less than other
masonry screening walls. Finally, Superior's concrete wall
eliminated the maintenance and replacement costs associated with wood.
