Concrete – The Most Sustainable Building Product

Sustainability means  the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level, and this certainly applies to concrete. Composed of water, limestone, shale, silica sand, clay, slate, waste byproducts from manufacturing, and iron ore – basically, limestone, dirt and water, these materials are all readily available resources.

No doubt about it, producing concrete creates dust and requires resources in terms of raw materials and energy during the manufacturing phase. However, concrete is the world’s most widely used construction product, and no other single material can match concrete for being a low impact building material.

The reason concrete has such a high level of sustainability is the same reason the produce has such a large carbon footprint.  It is because concrete is used in virtually every major construction and building project world-wide. If other building materials – such as steel, wood or glass — were as widely used as concrete, their carbon footprint would be even larger, according to the construction laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Recycling Concrete

Few people realize, but concrete can be recycled. With so much concrete used construction, there is a lot of concrete available for recycling. Environmental awareness and governmental regulations are increasingly driving companies to “think green.” Concrete from demolished buildings are crushed and turned into aggregate used to build new roads, or even used to manufacture new concrete. In the case of Superior Concrete Products, we use product overruns for retaining wall, office décor and even tiny houses in an effort to keep construction debris out of the landfill and to be a more ecologically conscious manufacturer.

While concrete is well-known for the ability to contain or channel water flow, conventional paving can block the flow of water into the soil, creating erosion, flash flooding and water table depletion – even pollution. Sometimes it is necessary to maintain a more balanced ecosystem. A new type of permeable concrete has been developed to help retain ground moisture. This infiltrating or permeable concrete which is being used in driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and other pavement projects. Infiltrating concrete allows water to trickle through a spongey network to help retain soil moisture and recharge the water table below the earth’s surface whenever it rains.
