Summer 2003

Managers of such intrusion-sensitive operations are scrambling to protect their power plants, water plants and city and commercial buildings to address Homeland Security recommendations and secure their workers and infrastructure. But many are faced with the realization that the old standards they're using to protect the perimeter of their existing or planned facilities, such as the chain-link fence and traditional masonry, may no longer suffice.

So they're looking for something more substantial and cost effective, but doing so at a time when faced with stricter building codes, escalating costs, growing neighborhood concerns and some of the worst budget constraints in decades.

Increasingly, one Dallas-Fort Worth company is reaching out to meet the more demanding market with a distinctive concrete-fence product that is literally rock solid.

County Highway Department Goes Online to Locate Solution to Screening Wall Need

Euless, TX - An old business card and a trip on the information highway led Jim Neal to something new to use along his own street.

Neal, project manager with the Hamilton (Indiana) County Highway Department, was planning a street-widening project in the town of Carmel, Indiana. The expansion would move a roadway closer to an existing residential development, and he wanted to investigate alternate ways to separate the two.

His superior provided an old business card he'd had on file for several years, leading Neal to the web site www.concretefence.com and Superior Concrete Products, a Texas company that manufactures reinforced, decorative precast concrete screening walls and sound barriers.

Superior's products look like the wood, stone or brick counterparts, yet can be a better value because there are no maintenance or replacement costs, said Barry Stevens, vice president of sales and engineering of Superior Concrete Products.

Precast concrete does not need painting, will not burn, warp, split or rot, is impervious to termites, and is designed not to crack or shift with ground movement.

It also has impressive sound reduction characteristics, Superior Concrete Products noted.

"We considered masonry but it was cost prohibitive," Neal said. "We also looked at wood, but it would require too much maintenance. We settled on precast because of its value, the fact it looks upscale with texture on both sides and ease of installation."

Superior is now completing the department's 146th Street project, which includes engineering work in addition to manufacturing and installing a 1,460' x 10' maintenance free Superior-Stone™ screening wall between the roadway and neighborhood.

The wall is designed for a 100 mph wind load, with gusts to 130 mph, and has a reflective sound transmission loss of at least 23 dB(A), Superior said.

Superior also helped get the precast screening walls accepted by the families along the right of way. "The homeowners had to approve the screening wall, and they were initially opposed to the idea," said Stevens.

Superior Concrete Products designs, manufactures and installs decorative precast concrete fencing and screening walls in a wide variety of styles and colors for use around road, utility, commercial, municipal and residential projects.
